5 reasons you need to visit this Mediterranean beach town

The coastal Israeli city of Netanya offers breathtaking views ... and a beach elevator.

When you think of Israel, the country's bigger cities of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa often come to mind. But today, we'd like to shine the spotlight on the coastal town of Netanya. Located on the shores of the Mediterranean just north of Tel Aviv, the city is home to about a quarter million people. As you can see in the video above, it offers breathtaking views and gorgeous beaches.

Below are five reasons it's worth a visit...

It's located atop jaw-dropping cliffs

The sands in Netanya are framed by rugged coastal cliffs, creating a kind of scenery that is not seen anywhere else in the country. Cliff-top promenades make it simple to enjoy the panoramic views and safely peer over the edge. The resort town is also one of Israel's premiere hang-gliding destinations.

You can take in a professional sports game

Netanya is a sports lover's paradise. The 13,000-seat stadium hosts three professional soccer teams. Not to mention there are pro basketball, handball and baseball teams there as well. The founder of the martial art known as Krav Maga opened an academy in Netanya. Plus, the locals take part in boxing, fencing, gymnastics and judo clubs. Who knows? You could even be sitting next to an Olympic hero. Israeli Judo medalists from the Rio Games Yarden Gerbi and Or Sasson both call the city of Netanya home.

It has a beach elevator

With its miles of beaches, it should come as no surprise that Netanya has its own beach elevator. In the southern end of the city lies a beach called Sironit, with a glass-walled elevator that allows pedestrians to get from the city center to the beach in no time. Perfect for a lazy summer day.

It's got food for every palate

When you visit Netanya, come hungry. The city attracts thousands of tourists each year and there's a restaurant for whatever mood you're in. Looking for some down-home cooking from the American South? Visit the Alabama steakhouse. Want to try some authentic Moroccan food? Try Marrakesh. In the mood for a European gastropub? Enter The Scotsman. There's even a Pizza Hut there.

It's a beautiful place to get married
