Plano, Ill.: 'Man of Steel'

Before Superman went toe-to-toe with the Dark Knight in this year's "Batman v Superman," he first held off an alien invasion in 2013's "Man of Steel." Playing the role of Clark Kent's fictional hometown of Smallville was none other than Plano, Ill.

The small, Midwestern town of about 11,000 people was transformed for several weeks during the summer of 2011, playing backdrop to several key sequences from the film. “We really couldn’t believe something as big as Superman could be filmed here,” resident Jim Martens, chairman of the annual Smallville Superfest, said in an interview.

In addition to the three-day Smallville Superfest, which features a zip line down Main Street for fans to "fly down," Plano also opened a museum in 2015 dedicated to the Man of Steel with props from the film.
