The Grand Bazaar
Istanbul's Grand Bazaar is one of the world's largest covered markets. At least 250,000 people stroll through its 60 covered streets each day, and annual visitor estimates top 90 million. Located inside Istanbul's historic Walled City, the Grand Bazaar has about 3,000 vendors. Since many of the visitors are tourists, souvenirs dominate the shopping scene. Intricate textiles, scents, spices, lamps and antiques are also on sale, as are famous Turkish rugs. Some shops specialize in gold and silver products.
Goods seem to spill out onto the walkways in front of shops. Sellers here are known to aggressively pursue would-be customers, who then have to bargain hard to get a good price if they decide to make a purchase. If you are seeking a market with a truly Old World atmosphere, Istanbul's Grand Bazaar is second to none.
