Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, South Africa
The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway takes passengers from sea level to the top of Cape Town's iconic peak. Each year, more than 800,000 people enjoy the five-minute trip. The cars are very large; they are able to hold 65 people. This is partly to deal with the demand and partly because a large mass is required to stay steady in the high winds that often blow from the ocean.
There are scenic overlooks, wildlife trails and biking opportunities on the top of Table Mountain, but most people ride the cableway solely for the view. During the trip, passengers can see almost all of Cape Town as well Table Bay and Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was once imprisoned.
