In the winter of 1930, Einstein spent 30 hours visiting Cuba. There was a ceremony in his honor at the Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences in Havana, and he later attended a banquet on the school's rooftop garden. He was honored at several more events, including at the Cuban Society of Engineers, and toured the city with his wife Elsa as much as he could during his remaining time on the island. One place they stopped was Santiago de las Vegas, a section of Havana known for its natural and historic beauty. The Einsteins departed Cuba and traveled to Panama and, from there, to California.
