The Yatir Forest sits on the edge of the Negev Desert, near the peak of Israel's Mount Hebron. It is the largest planted forest in the country, stretching for more than 7,000 acres. Four million trees have been planted since the first one took root in 1964. The forestation project was actually able to stop desertification in the area, which was once in danger of being swallowed up by the sands of the Negev.
Many of the trees in Yatir are species of pine and cypress, though broadleaf trees have also been planted, and there are olive and fig groves. The 600-mile Israel National Trail runs through the forest, and there are other trails as well.
