The Verona Arena, Italy

It doesn't get much more spectacular than this. In the 1st century, the Verona Arena hosted gladiator battles. In 2013, the very same arena played host to boy band One Direction. Call it progress. One of the most well-preserved ancient structures of its kind, it has become world-famous for its epic opera performances. This summer marks the opera festival's 93rd year. To celebrate, the organizers plan on staging six operas over the course of 54 nights (binoculars not included).
