Volunteers spend a week clearing brush, improving trail treads and installing drainage and erosion control structures. After putting in about six hours a day, you’re free to explore the surrounding beauty, including the stunning Pacific coast and vast California desert. Or check out dozens of other trail trips around the U.S. for a week or more of outdoor work and adventure. Possibilities include Maine’s Acadia National Park, the sunny Florida Trail and Virgin Islands National Park.

Accommodations: camping at Red-Tailed Roost Volunteer Headquarters (some trips offer cabins or bunkhouses)
