Hiking Trail Maintenance in Southern California

Don’t want to fly halfway around the world? Head to the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail in the gorgeous Laguna Mountains near San Diego. Volunteers spend a week clearing brush, improving trail treads and installing drainage and erosion control structures. After putting in about six hours a day, you’re free to explore the surrounding beauty, including the stunning Pacific coast and vast California desert. Or check out dozens of other trail trips around the U.S. for a week or more of outdoor work and adventure. Possibilities include Maine’s Acadia National Park, the sunny Florida Trail and Virgin Islands National Park.

Length: 1 week (some trips last up to 4 weeks)
Accommodations: camping at Red-Tailed Roost Volunteer Headquarters (some trips offer cabins or bunkhouses)
Approximate Price: Travel expenses to and from San Diego, plus program fees of $350 for AMC members and $385 for non-members.
Website: Appalachian Mountain Club
