Most people don't realize just how massive America's northern neighbor is until they see an image of it that was taken from space. In fact, Canada is second only to Russia in terms of overall area (land plus coastal waters).
Not only does this country cover a great deal of land lengthwise, it also stretches very far to the north. A military station on Ellesmere Island is the northernmost permanent settlement on earth. It sits at a latitude of 82.5 degrees north, a mere 500 miles from the North Pole. This is further to the north than the most remote outposts in Scandinavia and Russia.
