Rock hyrax

While they might look like oversized hamsters, these rock hyraxes hanging out on rocks in eastern Israel are most closely related to elephants and manatees. For real. Elephants, manatees and rock hyraxes are each other's closest cousins, all having originated from a common ancestor in Africa. Lady science is a mysterious gal.

They're about as big as small dogs – around 20 inches long – and they weigh around nine pounds. They also have multi-chambered stomachs and a special claw just for grooming.

They're social animals that tend to live in groups, as you can probably tell from the photo of these guys hanging out in Israel.
