Turkish Meadow Brown (Maniola telmessia)
Zablow says the Turkish Meadow Brown butterfly is one of his favorites, and for good reason. This butterfly isn't just stunning, it's impressive.
Its short life lasts from April to October, through some of the warmest months of the year in Israel. This species has adapted to desert temperatures by engaging in a type of state, sort of like hibernation, called diapause. The butterflies mate before diapause and lay their eggs after, ensuring the survival of their young.
