The lake that explodes
A crater lake in Cameroon, near an inactive volcano, Lake Nyos is beautiful but deadly. Magma fills this lake with carbon dioxide and turns it into carbonic acid. The lake once “exploded” with a cloud of carbon dioxide. Now, a degassing tube is in place to prevent it from happening again. Other exploding lakes include Lake Monoun in Cameroon and Lake Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
