Going, going, saved...

With some scientists convinced that the world is in the middle of a "sixth mass extinction," saving species on the brink is no easy task.

Fortunately, there are several inspiring success stories of remarkable animals saved at the 11th hour and given a foothold for survival. While some have rallied thanks to conservation programs and awareness, others have needed a bit of luck and help from Mother Nature to rise again.

The way back hasn't been easy, and the outcome still not guaranteed, but it's a brighter future for the following eight species today than yesterday.
