White rhinoceros

Among nature's most protective mothers, white rhinoceroses give birth to only one calf at a time. Tiny though Tanda's newborn may look in the photo, rhino babies can weigh over 100 pounds at birth! During the calf's first few (rather wobbly) days, it will spend most of its time guarded by its mother, and the bond between the two remains strong for the first year of the calf's life.

Your mom might say she doesn't pick favorites, but the rhino mother makes no such claim – by the time rhino calf number two comes around, the eldest is kicked out of the house, so to speak.

For the rhino mother, a huge bottle of hydrating lotion would be the ideal gift to soothe her tough skin. Rhinos can go days without water grazing along the grassland, and that can sure age a girl quickly!
