Mount Rainier is the highest point in the state of Washington at 14,411 feet. and is widely considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.
Despite remaining relatively quiet over the last 150 years, Rainier is geologically prone to devastating landslides. The last one, some 5,500 years ago, was so massive that it traveled for 100 miles before stopping.
Should Rainier erupt with the same force as Mount St. Helens, the impact would be even greater due to the massive amounts of glacial ice locked on the mountain. It is estimated that as many as 30,000 people would be in direct danger.
