7 dormant volcanoes you may not know about
Beautiful on the outside, these sleeping giants may one day awaken with destructive power.
Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
The highest mountain in Africa at 19,341 feet, Mount Kilimanjaro is also a dormant volcano with three distinct cones. While geologists believe two of Kilimanjaro's cones are now extinct, the third, named Kibo, occasionally shows signs of activity. The last eruption is estimated to have occurred between 150,000 and 200,000 years ago.
Popular with climbers from all around the world, Kilimanjaro has also become something of a bellwether for climate scientists. Due to increasing average global temperatures, it is estimated that the mountain will be completely devoid of ice by the year 2060.
