The single-minded sandgrouse
The crowned sandgrouse (Pterocles coronatus) is an extraordinary bird, going to great lengths to find water and retrieve it for its young. An insulating layer of down feathers allows this bird to regulate its body temperature in the hottest and coldest hours of the day and night. Its outer feathers have adapted to absorb and retain water, enabling it to bring back water to its chicks. Even more incredible, groups of sandgrouse will travel tens of miles to find a consistent watering hole.
