10 incredible desert animals that can take the heat
These awesome animals inhabit Israel's most arid environments, from the Judean Desert to the Negev.
The peculiar jerboa
The desert jerboa (Jaculus jaculus) is a super-rodent. It can run, balance atop its long tail, and leap nearly 10 feet in a single bound. Almost invisible against the sand, the desert jerboa also boasts spectacular hearing abilities. Jerboas burrow into the sand for shelter, plugging the holes of the burrows to keep out the heat during the daytime. These nocturnal hoppers don't even need to drink water — they get all they need from their food, which they can travel several miles to find.
