Up, up and away

Catcher Ryan Lavarnway of Israel takes a swing during Wednesday's game against Japan at the Tokyo Dome. He was named the Most Valuable Player during the Pool A stage of the Classic. Now that the tournament is over, the 29-year-old Lavarnway – who has played for the Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, and Atlanta Braves – will be returning to California for his catching duties with the Oakland Athletics club.
