Better than a mall

Online shopping and modern malls dominate today's retail scene, but in many places, old-fashioned street markets still thrive. If you are looking for fresh produce, rare vintage items or hard-to-find street-food specialties, one of these venues should be your first stop.

The world's best street markets have narratives that go back for a century or more. Though the surroundings and the things being sold may have changed over the years, the buzz of commerce and the old-world atmosphere still remain.

Thanks to a renewed interest in local goods, traditional markets made up of independent vendors are becoming more common. The seven markets we are about to share with you, though, are true standouts. They are iconic places that are known around the world for the quality of their products and their amazing atmosphere.
