Costa Rica

The men's national team of Costa Rica had something of a breakout performance at the 2014 World Cup, making it to the quarterfinals before losing to the Netherlands in a shootout. This extraordinary showing was on par with the country's obsession with the game. Some estimates say that half of the population play, which would easily make it the most soccer-obsessed country in the world.

The sport is so ingrained in the culture of the country that even the smallest villages feature soccer fields, many of them placed at the center of town.
