Another mystery herbal liqueur whose origins lie in Italy, Fernet is perhaps most popular in Argentina, where Italian immigrants brought it in the 20th century.
Fernet is made from a number of herbs and spices that vary according to the brand, but usually include myrrh, rhubarb, chamomile, cardamom, aloe and especially saffron, with a base of grape distilled spirits, and colored with caramel coloring. It has been described as tasting like "licorice devoid of sugar."
