7. University of California, Santa Barbara

This university is home to the renowned Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics. The directors include not one, not two, but three Nobel Prize winners: Walter Kohn, Robert Schrieffer and Davis Gross. So while everyone else is designing new iPhone interfaces and splicing fruit together, these guys are figuring out how the universe works. No biggie.

The school hosts 11 other National Research Centers, including the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, the Southern California Earthquake Center, the UCSB Center for Spatial Studies, an affiliate of the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis and the California Nanosystems Institute.
