From wooden to wondrous: The technology of wheelchairs
As medical science improves so many facets of our lives, the humble but vital wheelchair also advances.
The first electric wheelchair was created by George Klein, a Canadian inventor who aimed to assist World War II veterans. Working with a multidisciplinary team, Klein was able to execute a fully-functional, lasting design that still provides the basis for today's power chairs. By 1956, the electric-powered wheelchair was mass-produced by Everest & Jennings.
