Cities build vertically out of necessity, but also to project modernity to the world. Some cities go to great lengths, literally, to make this statement, and are home to iconic structures that seemingly defy gravity.
In New York there's One World Trade Center; in Chicago the Willis Tower. Across the globe China's Shanghai Tower rises 2,000 feet, as does the Burj Khalifa, in Dubai.
But there are plenty of other cities around the world with their own version of Goliath, created to dominate the skyline.
