Open design in Denmark

The super-modern Ørestad high school in Copenhagen is designed to be an open space where students are encouraged to communicate. Designed by 3xN, the school comprises four study zones that occupy one floor plan each. Avoiding level changes fosters organizational flexibility, and enables the different teaching and learning spaces to overlap and interact with no distinct borders. Students are able to break off into groups and form makeshift classrooms and movable walls and bookshelves create a more intimate learning environment.

The main intention of this school's design is to empower the students gradually to take responsibility for their own learning, which is reinforced by being able to work in teams as well as working individually.
