It was the 1930s, and radio and movies were all the rage. Einstein was no scientist avoiding the world in an ivory tower – he was into movies and even struck up a friendship with British actor Charlie Chaplin. So maybe it's not that surprising that the scientist created a device to reproduce sound.

This electromagnetic sound reproduction device was apparently fairly simple, if you're a person who knows how to make electromagnetic devices. He created it with German engineer Rudolf Goldschmidt, who went on to make other similar devices.
