'Roma'

Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón, best known for the sc-fi thriller "Gravity," is in the thick of the Oscars race for his drama "Roma," which was nominated for both Best Picture and Best Director among a host of other nominations. The film, a semi-biographical take on Cuarón's upbringing in Mexico City, has been described as both "achingly beautiful" and "enthralling" by critics.

“Ninety percent of the scenes represented in the film are scenes taken out of my memory,” Cuarón said. “Sometimes directly, sometimes a bit more obliquely. It’s about a moment of time that shaped me, but also a moment of time that shaped a country."

"Roma" also marks the first time an original Netflix film has earned an Academy Award nomination.
