7 movie sequels that outdid the original at the box office
With 'Star Wars' making box office history, we take a look at other times when lightning struck twice in Hollywood.
'Thor: The Dark World'
Australian actor Chris Hemsworth once again wielded the god of thunder's hammer for this sequel to the 2011 hit "Thor." The film, the eighth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, also brought back Israeli-American actress Natalie Portman, English actor Tom Hiddleston and Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins.
Building upon the events from the first film, "The Dark World" features Thor teaming up with his ill-tempered brother Loki to defeat the Dark Elves. While the plot was something of a mess, critics were won over by the film's "wildly entertaining" humor and charm.
At the end of its domestic U.S. run, "The Dark World" managed to rake in $206 million at the box office, a 14% improvement over the previous title.
