9 legendary beards of Hollywood
If there was an annual award for 'Best Beard,' these actors would win every time.
Tom Hanks in 'Cast Away'
To pull off the ragged look of a man truly stranded on a deserted island in the Pacific, American actor Tom Hanks took an entire year off from the production of "Cast Away." The unusual filmmaking decision, spearheaded by director Robert Zemeckis, allowed Hanks to drop more than 50 pounds and grow an exceptionally long beard.
"With the fat and then the beard, it was a great freedom," Hanks said in a 2001 interview. "Because you're going to look terrible whatever you do. You no longer have a good side. So you get past the self-consciousness and say, 'Well, this is what I look like because this is what is called for.'"
The themes of "Cast Away" were revisited in 2015, with critics of the Mars thriller "The Martian" quick to compare the two. Not surprising, American actor Matt Damon rocked a pretty decent beard while struggling to survive on the alien planet.
