Born to an Israeli doctor and an American artist in Jerusalem, Portman moved to the United States at the age of 3. Despite the shift in scenery, her parents continued her education in both Hebrew and English.
This dual-language environment inspired curiosity in foreign tongues from an early age, with Portman later going on to study French, German, Japanese and Spanish. Hebrew, however, is the one that remains close to her heart.
"The Hebrew language," she told an Australian newspaper, "has this incredible poetry and magic."
