Australian author Liane Moriarty's 2014 novel revolves around three mothers whose lives are turned upside-down by a local murder. In 2017, HBO adapted the book for a mini-series, a retelling that the author found refreshing.

“Because it’s HBO it all looks beautiful,” Moriarty said. “It’s got a darker, sexier, more glamorous feel than my books, and I think the tone of it is probably, overall, a bit darker. They did bring in the humor as well – but the main thing is its more glamorous feel.”

Another reason to tackle the book first is to enjoy the little subplots and deeper character motivations that never made it into the mini-series. With the book's plot set in Australia instead of America, readers will also enjoy the subtle cultural differences that are woven throughout.
