'Outlander'

American author Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series tells the story of an English woman from the 20th century who accidentally travels back in time to 18th-century Scotland. With its sweeping narrative and richly developed characters, the eight-book franchise has grown into an international phenomenon, complete with a hit series adaptation on Starz.

The real treat, however, of reading Gabaldon's books comes from the years of historical research she undertakes in weaving her fictional adventures. In addition to online scouring, she also references a personal library of some 1,500 books covering everything from 18th-century medicine to Gaelic/English dictionaries.

“It’s just a taste for detail, I suppose,” she told British Heritage.
