While HBO's adaptation of American author George R.R. Martin's fantasy series "Game of Thrones" is a television masterpiece, it's a downright appetizer compared to the feast of characters and storylines within the books.

"I’m going to write something just as big as my imagination," recalled Martin of his impetus to start the series. "I’m going to have all the characters I want, and gigantic castles, and dragons, and direwolves, and hundreds of years of history, and a really complex plot, and it’s fine because it’s a book. It’s essentially unfilmable. The irony is, of course, that’s what became filmed."

While HBO's series has since leapt ahead of the books, Martin is still fleshing out the world they're based on. His sixth novel, "The Winds of Winter," is likely to arrive in 2018 and cover more than 1,500 pages.
