Ralston, played by American actor James Franco, was hiking in Blue John Canyon in Utah in 2003, when an 800-pound rock became dislodged and pinned his arm. After five days of weathering the elements and rationing his food and water, he decided to take drastic measures to free himself
The film, which caused some people to faint during previews, went on to earn six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
