Brooklyn Books Festival: Brooklyn, New York

Brooklyn has long held an important place in American letters, so it comes as no surprise that one of the country's most important literary festivals takes place there each September.

A children's tent keeps the kiddies occupied, and there's the opportunity to see household names up close. This year such literary luminaries as Pete Hamill, Russell Banks and Jonathan Lethem are scheduled to appear.

Set astride the Brooklyn Bridge, festival goers have the opportunity to meet some of their favorite publishers and grab issues of their favorite literary publications, many of whom set up shop in the shadow of the borough's city hall.
