Calabash Festival: Treasure Beach, Jamaica

This three-day festival attracts some of the biggest names in the literary world. No surprise seeing as it's renowned as much for its settings as it is for its sightings (recent attendees have included literary stars such as Salman Rushdie, Zadie Smith and Colum McCann).

Taking place in the town of Treasure Island, on the southern tip of Jamaica, Calabash's many events are on the grounds of Jake's Hotel, a bohemian hideaway that has for decades been a favorite destination of artists and intellectuals visiting the island. Music and local flavor imbue the event, and it certainly isn't a drawback listening to a famous writer talk with the sound of Caribbean waves washing against the shore.
