Shift the dial on your memory to time spent in the school library, and you'll likely remember well the search through dusty shelves for a good book to read. While a beautifully illustrated cover might denote a closer look, more often than not it was the presence of a shiny Newbery or Caldecott medal that truly sealed the deal.
The awards, handed out annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, are considered two of the highest honors in children's literature. Not surprisingly, they're also a fertile source of inspiration for Hollywood – with several classic books making the leap from bookstore to blockbuster.
