Their colorful costumes and impressive moves show off an athletic prowess comparable to that of the guys shooting hoops.

Cheerleading is an incredibly popular sport around the world and has been growing throughout its impressive 150-year history; there are nearly 4 million cheerleaders in the U.S. alone, mostly in high schools and universities.

It's a physically demanding sport that requires strength, flexibility, gymnastics, acrobatics and dance training.

Professional cheerleading groups in the U.S. allow athletes to showcase their skills in leagues like the NBA Cheerleading League, the NFL Cheerleading League, the CFL Cheerleading League, the MLS Cheerleading League, the MLB Cheerleading League and the NHL Ice Dancers.

Many European basketball teams also have cheerleaders. When they're not cheering at games and competing, many cheerleading teams do philanthropy work, modeling, motivational speaking and television performances.
