After handball, Messi's Argentina ties Uruguay 2-2 in friendly
Messi mania hits a fever pitch at Tel Aviv's Bloomfield Stadium as Barcelona teammates Messi and Luis Suarez met in exhibition match.
Final score: Uruguay 2 - Argentina 2
It was Messi vs. Suarez in a friendly football match today between the national soccer teams of Argentina and Uruguay. The match ended in a 2-2 tie after a dizzying handball.
Though the two superstars have met before, one thing that was unique about this game was that it was held in Israel, at Bloomfield Stadium, where Tel Aviv's club teams normally play.
With Uruguay's hot strikers, Luis Suarez and Edinison Cavani, going up against "La Pulga" himself, Lionel Messi, there was plenty of action on the field today. Cavani scored the only goal in the first half, sending Uruguay into the locker room at halftime with the lead.
Argentina tied the game at 1 at the start of the second half when Sergio Agüero scored, thanks to an assist from Messi.
Argentina only had a little time to celebrate, because just five minutes later Uruguay scored again, taking the lead 2-1 on a kick from striker Luis Suárez. With time running out in the game, Messi scored on a penalty kick, tying the game 2-2.
The main attraction at the sold-out arena on Monday was the 32-year-old Messi, considered one of the best players ever to grace the soccer pitch, who also plays for Spanish club Barcelona FC alongside Suarez. Messi has the second-most goals scored of all time in the European Cup and UEFA Champions League. Suárez has won 18 trophies in his career, which include six league titles, a UEFA Champions League title at club level, and a Copa América with Uruguay.
And clearly, the fans are ready for a show, as many brought their Messi memorabilia and are thrilled to display their allegiance to La Pulga.
