Chocolate shawarma exists!
A new spin on an old favorite, the Choco-Kebab combines the decadence of chocolate with the convenience of a wrap.
"Today I Learned" is a series of articles that explain interesting or little-known facts about life and culture.
With on-screen mentions in cinematic blockbusters like Marvel's The Avengers and Emmy-winning television shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, shawarma is all the rage these days. But how do you improve on perfection? By taking the street-food delicacy (which traditionally involves meat shaved off a large rotating spit and tucked into a pita or wrap) to a whole new level with chocolate! Yes, that's right, chocolate shawarma exists.
The Choco-Kebab replaces the meat part of shawarma with shaved chocolate and any combination of toppings - like nuts, marshmallows and syrup - all rolled up inside a yummy pita-crepe (slightly thicker than your run-of-the-mill French crepe). Mmm...
The Choco-Kebab is a popular dessert treat in Italy, where food industry neophyte Oded Cohen was traveling when he saw the chocolate machine and decided to bring the chocolate shawarma fun back home to Israel.
“The Choco-Kebab is an Italian concept and it is catching on in many different countries,” Cohen told Tablet magazine. “It’s very popular in Turkey and Lebanon and we’re going to make it a hit in Israel.”
Cohen has already opened branches in Hod HaSharon, Ness Ziona and Modi’in with more definitely on the way, including one in Tel Aviv, where it's sure to be a hit with locals and tourists alike.
