Service for songwriters hits all the right notes
SoundBetter offers a new way for musicians to connect with producers.
Recording and distributing music has never been easier. Thanks to software programs such as Pro Tools and Logic Pro, artists can record in the comfort of their own home and then distribute their music on the internet via any number of outlets.
But a polished product ready for the ears of the public is harder to come by – there's the mixing, mastering and producing that need to be done, all of which demand expert attention.
"It's something that takes skill, talent, experience. Most musicians don't have the necessary abilities to undertake this part of the production process," Shachar Gilad told From The Grapevine.
Gilad's solution was to launch SoundBetter, an online marketplace that allows musicians and music production specialists to connect. He and fellow Israeli Itamar Yunger are partners in the company.
After working in development for companies such as Apple and Waves, Gilad, a successful musician in his own right, realized such a resource was necessary. "Working for these companies, I got to know musicians and production specialists better, and I saw this growing need to connect the two," Gilad explained.
"Artists like Rihanna or Madonna – they know who they are going to work with from the start. But there are thousands and thousands of independent artists out there who aren't so fortunate."

SoundBetter is quite simple to use. Just create a profile and fill out a form describing your project or interests, and you're connected to thousands of musicians or production specialists, depending on your search preference.
Whether you're looking for a quick mix from an unknown or someone a bit more prestigious, SoundBetter connects aspiring artists and producers to more established figures in the music industry like acclaimed mixer Manny Marroquin, a nine-time Grammy award winner.
Sefi Carmel is another acclaimed music production specialist who has been charmed by the benefits of SoundBetter.
The award-winning Israeli-British producer based in London has worked on Hollywood feature films and mixed, remixed and mastered tracks for David Bowie, Phil Collins, Bruno Mars, Michael Bublé, Massive Attack, B.B. King and many others, you would think he'd have little need for a service like SoundBetter. But you'd be wrong.
"It opened up a marketplace, artists that I never would have worked with, in a very surprising way," he told From The Grapevine.
"When I registered for SoundBetter, I thought maybe a mix or two will come through this, but there's been a steady flow of interesting projects."
Carmel says he's now in the process of mixing three albums and has worked on other projects for film and video games, all of which came through SoundBetter.
What's more, it's given him access to artists throughout the world, and not just in and around London.
"I've worked with artists in New York, Tokyo and Milan, and I've never actually met any of them except through Skype chats," he said. "It's artists you never would have come across if it weren't for SoundBetter. The possibility of discovering new artists is very exciting."
Much like popular car-sharing services and rental service Airbnb, users are prompted to provide feedback on their collaborators. This keeps the level of professionalism high and maintains a level of trust necessary for successful artistic collaborations.
"I'm probably at the higher end of the market, but my customer reviews mean people know they're going to get good service," Carmel said.
And good service is exactly what Gilad hopes users of SoundBetter receive.
"Our goal is to become the one-stop shop for artists in getting to a great finished product," he said.
