Samsung turns the heat up on Apple
The tech giant has leaked new information about its Apple Watch competitor.
The wearables market just got a bit more interesting, with Samsung leaking details this week about its newest smartwatch, tentatively to be called Gear A.
The Korean tech giant is no stranger to the smartwatch. Seven Samsung smartwatches are on the market already, but this newest addition, part of an upgraded line of wearables Samsung is calling “Next Gear,” is expected to directly compete with Apple's recently released Apple Watch.
Samsung plans on competing with a bevy of smart design features, including a round dial that will differentiate it from the square Apple dial (and those of its own smartwatch lineup). Another notable feature is the scrollable bezel that allows users to jump between screens, zoom in on an image, control volume and more.
The watch will run on Tizen, Samsung's own operating system, and will offer elite health and fitness features courtesy of the company's Simband technology (see video below), which leverages the bio-sensing technology of the Israeli company LifeBEAM. Packed with sensors, the watch band will be able to monitor pulse, calories and other vital signs.
Samsung and Apple have long competed for mobile supremacy. Apple leads in the American market with a 40 percent share, but globally it trailed Samsung as recently as last year, though both companies came even by the end of the fiscal year, each shipping 74.5 million smartphones in the fourth quarter.
