Who says that utilitarian objects have to be plain and boring? The eye-catching kitchen utensils and household gadgets from Israel’s Peleg Design are both functional and entertaining.

Think trivets resembling crime scene body outlines or a fish-shaped egg separator that sucks in the yolk through its puffy silicone lips – witty, imaginative designs that manage to maneuver the fine line between gimmicky and clever.

“The world of Peleg Design revolves around three basic principles: functionality, aesthetics and humor,” designer Shahar Peleg writes on his website. “It is a world motivated by continuous curiosity with the explicit purpose to transform what was once an average, been-there-done-that concept into an innovative and truly exciting experience.”

The company’s creative new products include Arty, a miniature easel that turns to-do lists and office doodles into works of art. Board Brothers is a stand for kitchen cutting boards that consists of buff twin figurines that appear to be holding it in place. The LightMark is a bookmark in the guise of a mini task lamp that keeps your place, shining a translucent plastic beam of faux light into the text that you can use to follow text as you read.

Rollo is a paper towel holder that transforms your absorbent towels into a trompe l’oeil paint roller, and hangs easily on a wall-mounted rod next to pots, pans and utensils for easy access.
