3 women who could take Gisele's place as 'Queen of the Runway'

With the supermodel retiring from fashion shows, who is now the top of the heap?

The black armbands are out in Soho, Paris, Milan and other fashion capitals today, as Gisele Bündchen announced that she's retiring from fashion shows at the "ripe old age" of 34, according to USA Today.

She announced her departure on Instagram, saying that after 20 years (!) strutting down runways, her body is telling her it's time to stop. She'll still go in front of the camera for modeling shoots, of course, but this gives her time to spend with her husband, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, and their two children.

So who will take Gisele's place at the top of the fashion heap? She's been the highest-earning supermodel, according to Forbes, and no one has even come close. Fortunately for the fashion industry, there are plenty of candidates. Here are three whom we think are poised to become Gisele-level stars.

1. Kate Upton

In pretty quick order, Upton has become one of the top models around today, mainly because of her All-American beauty. She's been modeling for seven years, but her career really took off in 2011, when a camera caught her doing "the Dougie" at an L.A. Clippers game. Since then, she's been on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, the 100th anniversary issue of Vanity Fair, and signed numerous commercial deals as well as landed a few acting roles in movies like "Tower Heist" and "The Other Woman."

2. Bar Refaeli

Refaeli has also been on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue and starred in a Super Bowl ad for Go Daddy, among other accomplishments. She's also Israel's top model and the host of that country's version of "The X-Factor." But she's definitely ready for a big leap, and is immensely popular on social media, as evidenced by her Marie Claire Mexico photo spread that recently rocketed its way around the web.

3. Miranda Kerr

Kerr has been nipping at Bündchen's heels in the rankings for some time now; she even replaced Gisele as the spokesmodel for the H&M clothing chain. Like Upton, she's branched out a bit, dueting with Bobby Fox on an Elvis Presley cover and putting her name on a line of bone china and teacups for the Royal Albert company.
