Safe sunscreen for sun lovers
These healthy sunscreens will protect skin from damaging rays.
Of all the trends we see come and go year after year, sunblock should be the eternal summer essential. Yet, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, only 14 percent of men and 30 percent of women wear sunscreen daily.
In addition to sunscreen, it's critical that people take other measures to protect themselves from the sun, such as covering up, seeking shade, wearing sunglasses, and going outdoors in the early morning and late afternoon when the sun is lower in the sky. Keep in mind that clouds do not block damaging rays and that ultraviolet radiation is reflected off sand and water, intensifying exposure even if you are protected by an umbrella from above.
Sunscreens can play a role in preventing sunburns that are a major risk factor for melanoma, but should be thought of as just one tool in your arsenal. Here, our favorite sunscreens that are easy to apply and won’t leave a ton of white residue behind or cause you to break out.
Mineral Fusion SPF 40 Facial Moisturizer is a natural moisturizing sunscreen fortified with anti-aging peptides and minerals. We’re fans of this Denver-based mineral cosmetic company for making a facial moisturizer that isn’t just non-toxic, but lightweight, non-greasy and extra-moisturizing. The product costs $24.99 and is available at Whole Foods and on the Mineral Fusion website.
Safe Harbor's easy-to-apply and gentle formula includes 100 percent naturally sourced ingredients and nutrients, such as jojoba oil, chamomile, lemon balm and more. This sunscreen is formulated by the company's research and innovation team in Israel; you can count on this product to protect your precious one from harmful rays. It glides on so smooth, you'll want to slather it on your own skin. The price ($7.98) is really great, too. It's available at Walmart.
If you enjoy outdoor workouts, rugged adventures, and can’t sit still on the beach, Alba Botanica’s Sport Sunscreen is for you. Formulated in Lake Success, New York, this product is both water resistant and paraben-free and fragrance-free. This means you can have fun in the sun without worrying about sweating if off or absorbing harmful chemicals into your skin. You can find this product ($11.49) at CVS, Duane Reade, Whole Foods or on the Alba Botanica website.
Block Island Organics’ Natural Mineral Sunscreen absorbs instantly on your skin and doesn't leave a ghostly white residue. We love its light, pleasant scent, and the fact that it doesn’t contain toxic ingredients such as parabens, sulfates, petrochemicals or phthalates is great. This product costs $15.99 and is available online.
