What we learned from the new 'Batman v Superman' teaser
Director Zack Snyder gives us our first look at what's sure to be one of the most epic confrontations in superhero history.
Hot on the heels of last week's second teaser for "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens" comes the first trailer of director Zack Snyder's highly anticipated superhero showdown, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." Intended as a sequel to 2013's "Man of Steel," the film will feature the world's two most popular superheroes squaring off against each other, as well as appearances by Lex Luthor, Wonder Woman and Aquaman.
With the film not slated to be released until next year, Snyder is keeping the exact plot details a closely guarded secret. This first teaser, however, has provided some insight into the dark, gritty world of DC Comics where audiences will find themselves. You have until March 2016 to decide if you're Team Batman or Team Superman.
1. Batman has a new voice
At the end of the teaser, we finally have an opportunity to hear Ben Affleck's new Batman voice – and wow, is it ever an improvement! Rather than rely upon the actor to come up with some kind of gravely voice (like Christian Bale was forced to do for director Christopher Nolan's trilogy), it sounds as if Snyder gave the Dark Knight a voice modulator. Finally – Batman can intimidate people and disguise his voice without stressing his vocal cords.
Trains and Batmobiles
No teaser featuring Batman would be complete without a look at the new Batmobile, but we're also given a peek at the new Batplane. Or is it? We're inclined to believe, based on the shape alone, that this is straight out of the Batcave. Others have speculated, however, that it could be a certain stealth jet belonging to a certain Amazonian warrior princess.
Yes – Wonder Woman! Beyond the one glimpse Snyder has given us of the beloved superhero, played by Israeli actress Gal Gadot, we've yet to see anything additional. We do know she plays a major role in the new film (and will soon also have her own solo movie), so there's certainly more on the horizon for 'BvS' fans to get excited for.
3. All ears on Lex Luthor
The teaser opens with a montage of voices openly questioning whether a being as powerful as Superman can be trusted.
It's not immediately apparent, but one of the voices heard is that of Lex Luthor, played by actor Jesse Eisenberg. "We know better now, don't we?" he says menacingly. "Devils don't come from hell beneath us. No, they come from the sky." Fans of the last year's science TV series "Cosmos," will also recognize astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, as well as actors Holly Hunter and Jeremy Irons.
If you haven't seen the full trailer already, give it a viewing below. Snyder is also promising some new images in the special IMAX version of the teaser set to debut today. If anything spectacular is revealed, we'll update accordingly here.
'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' is slated for release on March 26, 2016.
