'Wonder Woman' ranked best superhero movie of all time
Gal Gadot's 'charismatic' performance as the Amazon princess sends the film soaring to the top.
"Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman.
Now the world is ready for you,
and the wonders you can do."
Those lyrics to the theme song of the original "Wonder Woman" TV series that aired in the 1970s have more resonance than ever, now that the blockbuster 2017 movie has broken records left and right and sent Israeli actress Gal Gadot soaring to superstardom. And now comes another triumph: Rotten Tomatoes has ranked the film the No. 1 superhero movie of all time. That means EVER, in case we weren't clear enough.
This movie, and its captivating star, have continued to wow critics and fans alike since its June opening. Just last week, Warner Bros. announced a whopping $800 million box office total, making it the highest-grossing superhero origin film of all time.
So why such high praise? Well, that's something the folks at Rotten Tomatoes know a thing or two about. In the aforementioned ranking, they gave "Wonder Woman" a virtually unheard-of 92% positive rating, calling the film "thrilling, earnest, and buoyed by Gal Gadot's charismatic performance."
And if that weren't distinctive enough, the film is being campaigned by Warner Bros. for Oscar contention. If it succeeds, it would be the first time a superhero movie takes home an Academy Award.
Despite the abundance of acclaim, it's not like any of us should be surprised, five months after its release, that a long-awaited origin story of one of the comic world's most beloved characters would be so well-received. After all, even before its release date, a few lucky critics got a sneak peek of the movie and were, naturally, blown away.
Loved WONDER WOMAN. She reminds me of Christopher Reeve's Superman: true north superhero w/ no angst or cynicism, which is needed right now.— Mike Ryan (@mikeryan) May 19, 2017
So, the boxes have been checked. Best superhero movie, highest-grossing superhero movie, possibly the first superhero movie to win an Oscar ... what could possibly top that?
Oh, how about another movie once again putting Gal Gadot in the role of Wonder Woman, joining forces with Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash, in the ensemble film "Justice League" coming later this month?
We'll just get in line now.
