Inbar Lavi on season 2 of 'Imposters' and what she wants to do next

The Israeli actress reveals her favorite co-star and why she may be behind the camera soon.

Playing Maddie on “Imposters,” the seductive con artist at the center of the series, Inbar Lavi changes her looks, name and personality with every scam she runs. As someone who plays pretend for a living, Lavi can relate.

“The thing I love most about Maddie is how much we have in common. I’m an actress who gets to play a great actress,” Lavi told From The Grapevine. “The difference is her stage is the real world.” It’s an exciting world to inhabit for the Israeli actress, who filled us in about the new season, which premieres April 5 on Bravo.

As it begins, Maddie’s past actions have caught up with her and she’s hiding out from her trio of retribution-seeking exes, her crooked associates and the FBI. “Everything is going to come back and confront her,” Lavi explained.

She craves a normal life, but doesn’t know if that’s a possibility, considering she’s been in the con game since she was a teenager. (A flashback halfway through the season reveals how that happened.) Can she get out when she’s in so deep? “I think she’s asking that same question and doesn’t know how or what that means,” said Lavi. “The more interesting question is what is a normal life? It’s different for everybody.”

Meanwhile, her exes – who became cons themselves to exact revenge – are now on the run after a scheme involving a stolen $1.5 million diamond ring backfires. They wind up in Mexico for a while, and actually part of the season was filmed there, but all other scenes – including all of Lavi’s – were shot in Toronto.

“I went to Mexico on my own with my mom after we wrapped,” Lavi revealed. “It was quite glorious.” She went home to visit her family in Israel a few months back, and visits as often as her schedule allows. “They’re like, ‘We just saw you, give us a break.’ But I can’t help it. I miss it so much. I crave it.”

Lavi, who now lives in Los Angeles with her rescue dog Chilly, loved working with a canine actor in an episode this year. “It was exciting for me,” she said. “I like when I don’t know what’s going to happen, and it takes me by surprise.” When working with animals or props, “I have so much to do and don’t really have time to think. I can be more present.”

During her hiatus between seasons of “Imposters," Lavi filmed a movie called “Sorry For Your Loss,” a dark comedy that casts her as a new mom who’s dealing with postpartum depression. But her future roles may “not necessarily be about me being in front of the camera,” she told us. She wants to get involved in creating, producing and directing her own projects going forward. “I want to tell my own stories,” she said. “That’s what I’m focusing on at the moment.”
