Chris Pine's next role? Wonder Woman's boyfriend

Actor will co-star along with actress Gal Gadot as her co-worker and love interest Steve Trevor.

Chris Pine, who rose to fame as Captain Kirk in the rebooted "Star Trek" franchise, has confirmed that he's now taking on a very different role: Wonder Woman's boyfriend.

The American actor will be portraying Steve Trevor, a WWII intelligence officer who crash lands on the hidden island home of the Amazons. Wonder Woman, played by Israeli actress Gal Gadot, nurses Trevor back to health, falls in love with him, and then follows him back to the U.S. where she becomes both his co-worker (under the alias Diana Prince) and a crime-fighting superhero.

While Trevor's role in the original 1940s comic series was purely that of a love interest, subsequent reboots of the character have featured him taking on more of an action star role in the DC Comics universe. Based on Pine's previous work, it wouldn't be surprising if this is the direction Warner Bros. decides to take with the character.

"I’m super excited, of course," says Pine of his new role. "Gal Gadot is super talented."

"Wonder Woman" is slated for a 2017 release, with director Patty Jenkins at the helm. Fans of the Amazonian warrior princess will get their first glimpse of Gal Gadot in action in director Zack Snyder's upcoming "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" in which she'll appear. In an interview with earlier this year, the actress says the role spoke to her long before she even knew she would play it.

"They always asked me, ‘What’s your dream role?’ and I never could define it," she said. "I always answered that I wanted to play a woman that is strong and will be a source for women empowerment. I don’t want to play a damsel in distress that needs to be saved. I don’t like it when women in the movies are shown as the victims. I always thought that if I could send out a message, I want to show the strong side of a woman and how she can handle tough situations."

While Pine certainly has a lot to learn about the Wonder Woman universe, we’ve created a quiz for our readers to test their own skills here.

And in the meantime, we’ve scoured the Internet to see what kind of special talents Pine might bring to the superhero franchise. May we suggest his dulcet singing pipes as featured in the clip below? You're welcome.
